Introduction

LO, TZU-HENG

This website shows my photography work at university. Often leaning towards storytelling through text, through the process of experimenting with photography and studying communication courses, I developed a fondness for narrating stories through visuals.

Photos capture moments and feelings that are sometimes difficult to express in words, allowing me to revisit those scenes every time I look back at the pictures. This is the characteristic of photography that I find most captivating.

Scavenger & Recycle Industry

This work captures the daily lives and living conditions of scavengers, accompanied by interviews exploring their feelings about their identity.

Through this series of news features, I aim to make the public aware of the indispensable societal function of scavengers. Additionally, I hope to shed light on the challenges they face within the current societal structure and explore potential solutions.

A large volume of recyclables is flattened beneath the wheels of a crane, allowing the facility to accommodate continuously produced plastic and metal cans.

IMG_3494

To minimise sun exposure, bicycles with trailers have become essential tools for recyclers, enabling efficient transport of recyclables and reducing physical strain.

IMG_2275

Most residents are willing to hand over recyclables to recyclers, but prefer not to have them living next door, creating a paradoxical relationship of mutual benefit.

Recyclers are immersed in the cycle of collecting and selling recyclables almost the entire day, without a fixed time for rest, which leads to occupational hazards.

Qingming Festival

This piece covers the Asian ancestral festival, Qingming Festival, showcasing how people commemorate their ancestors, and the subdued atmosphere at the scene.

The article explores the changing ways of worship, noting the decline of traditional incense offerings due to increased environmental awareness in today's society.  Instead, people are now adopting other ways to express their feelings of remembrance.

BDSM Exhibition

This work, starting with a BDSM exhibition, explores why individuals approach their primal, animalistic nature through sensations of pain.

Given my lack of prior exposure to such topics, the filming process prompted unique reflections. To prevent the exhibition from veering into explicit themes, I employed various perspectives and materials to diminish explicit elements. I aimed to emphasise the theme through changes in lighting while avoiding an overly sensationalised portrayal.

Taipei Street View

This is a collection of photographs I took while exploring Taipei in my free time.

Throughout this process, I aimed to capture Taipei's scenery from different angles. To complement Taipei's often cloudy weather, I adjusted the exposure to create a moody atmosphere in the photos. Considering that homeless individuals are frequently present on Taipei streets, I believe that photographs of them represent an important aspect of life in the city.

Through contrast of light and shadow, I present the outer architectural structure and use an upward angle to create a majestic landscape.

IMG_2404

Even bins can present a different atmosphere when captured from the right angle and under appropriate lighting.

IMG_0757

Used slow shutter speed to capture trajectories of people coming and going, and to portray distinctive features of a bustling city.

IMG_0048

The homeless often go unnoticed, but are a common sight in Taipei, so it is necessary to capture and document their presence.

IMG_0049

A homeless person is sleeping on the streets near Taipei Main Station, undisturbed by bustling and noisy surroundings.

IMG_0050

Dim lighting accentuates loneliness, capturing facial expressions adds more tension and depth to the photograph.

IMG_2068

Backlighting accentuates silhouette of the leaves, while the streetlight prevents the elements from appearing too monotonous.

IMG_2431

Winding pathway in the park adds a dynamic element, and the appearance of a scavenger creates a highlight.

Using the reflection in puddles, combined with real lighting, it shows an atmosphere where reality and illusion blend.

Flower Season At Park

This series captures the floral beauty of Daan Forest Park in Taipei during the blooming season.

The clear weather provided ample natural light, eliminating concerns about exposure issues. The challenge lay in directing the focus of the photos. To address this, I used a telephoto lens to minimise or blur the surroundings. Additionally, I aimed to capture the activities of people in the park, including picnics, meditation and dancing, adding dynamic elements to the collection.

During the flower season, the park is crowded with people who are eager to catch a glimpse of the blossoms.

A group of people sit on the grass in the park after enjoying the flowers, having a picnic and savouring a leisurely afternoon.

IMG_2058

Using a wide-angle lens to capture the expansive scenery of the park, the lines of the river bring out a perspective effect.

Indigenous Culture Activity

This photo series posed a particular challenge for me - finding a way to convey the theme through the contrast of light and shadow in a dim environment.

The event took place indoors, with the only light source being the stage lights. To maintain photo quality without adjusting the ISO too much, I experimented with various combinations of shutter speed and aperture. The yellow stage lighting created a warm atmosphere, fitting well with the theme of this series, so I chose not to adjust the white balance.

The organisers assembled stones and slates, sourced from indigenous tribes, as a backdrop, coupled with lighting, the setup shows the enthusiasm of that culture.

A group of indigenous performers dressed in traditional attire sing songs, aiming to increase public awareness and understanding of their heritage.

IMG_1003

Through backlighting and shooting from a low angle, the plants appear as if they are being reborn, and the surrounding halo of light adds a magical touch.

IMG_0086

The plant arrangement in the small corner may seem inconspicuous. But the contrast created by the backlight significantly enhances the impact.

IMG_0088

Concurrently, it shows how indigenous people sun-dry crops and tools they use, while lacking explanatory details, it allows the public to experience diversity.

Recording Life

I have a passion for capturing life through photography and videography because these visual mediums offer the audience a more direct emotional experience. Every time I revisit the photos I have taken in the past, it feels like I am transported back to the original scene, reliving the emotional moment of pressing the shutter. I hope that one day, the photos I take can immerse the audience in the touching stories behind each image.

IMG_0714

I contrast the person's subdued tones with the colours of background, adding an artistic touch by partially covering the face with an umbrella.

IMG_0730

I blend the figure with reflected scenes through glass, creating an ambiguous space to depict the integration of reality and virtuality in a digital age.

IMG_2130

In my first attempt at capturing the Taiwan Pride Parade, dealing with a large crowd and a complex background posed the biggest challenge, yet this experience taught me the importance of simplifying background elements.

IMG_2148 (1)

On the route of the Pride Parade, you can always spot signs for Free Hugs, Through this activity, the public becomes less apprehensive about the LGBTQ+ community and individuals with sexually transmitted infections.

IMG_2203

Organising the album made me feel the passion of those who went on streets for the LGBTQ+ community and the experience strengthened my love for capturing moments through photography in everyday life.
